What Lies Beneath

When out in the line up, waiting for that lurker on the horizon, do you ever find yourself thinking about the world below? The ocean is one of the unique environments where two worlds can meet. A place where you can be out fighting for position on a wave, and below you some alien creature is struggling for survival or a pod of dolphins is shredding through the waves along side you.
The stunning images of Dustin Humphery create the ultimate fantasies, depicting what is taking place underneath the surface, the combination of two worlds, where real life meets the surreal. At least that is my take on his work. These images should get your creative juices flowing. The pictures below were part of the Insight Dopamine ad campaign that won Humphrey the 2009 Sony World Photography Award for Commercial Advertising.

The concepts blow my mind, and bring a whole new perspective to surf photography. The timing and amount of preparation to capture each of these images alone should be enough to draw your attention. Be it a naked girl riding a motorcycle, a barrage of underwater ballerinas, or an undersea graveyard, these unique and bizarre images should make your imaginations run rampant.

I love Dustin's work because it pushes the boundaries creatively, with its collision of two worlds, a mysterious unknown dream world mixed with the beautiful reality of surfing itself. At times surfing is truly surreal, making these images a perfect metaphor for the magic, mystery, and beauty behind surfing and the ocean itself.

So next time you put a big slash in on a wave, try to image the world underneath, and know that you have a troop of naked ballerinas on your side.

Just Color, Enjoy

Let this visual orgasm play with your senses!

Just Colour from Jesper Kirkeby Brevik on Vimeo.

This film is my contribution to a class assignment at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. It is a visualization of an orchestral piece, using just colour to convey the unique character and aesthetic feeling of the different instruments in use. The musical track chosen is from The Sound of Magic, composed by DJ Dreamland.

Kind Bud: All The Little Weeds

Let's talk a little about weed, or should I say, lets talk about the little weeds, and I'm not referring to that Mary j., maui waui, kush or dandelions in your backyard. These little weeds consist of surfers, filmmakers, writers, models, and photographers. Little weeds is a Australian based contest, sponsored by STAB Magazine and Billabong. The contest is pretty sweet considering what you can win, which includes the cover of Stab, a sponsorship with Billabong, the editor's keys to STAB for an issue and a ton of other awesome prizes. All nationalities are welcome to compete, even though this little shindig is taking place down under. However, if you're a yank, there is one tiny problem, STAB can't afford to fly you over if you happen to win, but at least you have the chance to try your luck.

Here's the scoop:
Little Weeds is a series of three five-to-six week heats. It's an online competition where you create a profile and upload photos and video of yourself. Those entries are then voted on by the public. There are five categories: modelling, surfing, writing, photography and videography. The three winners of the three heats (ultimately chosen by mentors after considering all votes and comments) of all five categories will be flown to an undisclosed location in July to compete against other Little Weeds. From here (and sponsorship proposals willing), we'll take all five winners to another undisclosed location (okay, Bali) and create an entire issue of Stab (or Spit x Stab) on-location created by and featuring Little Weeds winners.

A taste of the competition: here is one of the finalists in the contest, Riley Blakeway. He's got some pretty impressive work under his belt, he's only 19, and he shot with Dustin Humphrey before shooting Modern Collective. All in all, I can see why he is one of the top little weeds. Log on to http://www.stabmag.com/littleweeds/ to check out Riley and his competition's work, (especially in the model section) and make sure to vote for your favorite little weed.

The Collective

Wouldn't it be great to assemble a collective group of film enthusiasts, surfers, ragers, and all around solid dudes to travel the world and document everything along the way? This would be an innovative concept except I think it may have already been done.
If you haven't heard about the Modern Collective, here's the scoop. With director Kai Neville at the helm, and the surfing talents of Dane Reynolds, Jordy Smith, Dusty Payne, Dion Agius, Mitch Coleborn, and Yadin Nicol, Modern Collective sounds like a sure fire success, but what if I were to tell you that it is possible to follow this film on a day-to-day, trip-to-trip basis. You might say that I have taken one too many to the head, but the truth is this film is a living, breathing, creation, that is constantly evolving, and bringing all of its fans along for the ride. The Modern Collective blog allows fans to follow the process of shooting, and give some input themselves. One post awhile back asked fans to send in music, so the film would have a wide variety of music to keep all the viewers happy. Being able to be a part of this film is awesome, and being able to follow it all the way through production and post is pretty sweet too. It seems like a never ending saga, even though they have started to storyboard the intro of this bad boy in the studio, it is not quite in the can, more shooting will proceed later this month, just adding to the sensation of how this film lives in the present tense, always looking ahead to the future. Check out the trailer and blog below

Dion: My New Goofy Foot Hero

"I just surf, and travel...people are like, so basically you're a bum." Dion Agius' video blog is quite possibly one of the most entertaining things I have stumbled across online in a long time. The video blog follows Dion around the world, documenting his surfing & shenanigans, shedding a little light into the day-to-day life of a pro surfer. The fact that he is Australian is also a plus, half the things he says are fucking ridiculous, aussie slang is quite possible the funniest shit I've ever heard. After watching, I am even more convinced that I have to visit Australia ASAP. Here are a few episodes to wet your palette. If this doesn't get you frothing about surfing or raging hard, I don't know what will, enjoy.

On a More Positive Note

Plastic in the ocean may have put a damper on your day, but here is something that might cheer you up. A glimpse at one of the more enjoyable aquatic activities. While perusing Dion Agius' blog I came across this little gem and got quite a chuckle, take a look at Sir Richard Branson tearng it up on a kiteboard.

IT"S THE SIZE OF TEXAS

Pacific Trash Patch

Well this is a bummer, seems that the North Pacific Gyre (large vortex of currents) has accumulated a trash patch of plastic shit the size of Texas in the middle of the Pacific. Traditionally these large vortexes were nutrient rich due to the fact that they accumulated everything in the Pacific, but since plastic is not bio-degradable, it lingers, breaking down into smaller particles and reeking havoc on all forms of animal life, all the way down to tiny plankton, who will get consumed by other animals, resulting in plastics working up the food chain. Birds and other animals are also consuming the plastic and dieing. Check out some of the pics. This is pretty scary.

Basic Human Instinct: Harmony, Balance, Rhythm.

Some define art as being a basic human instinct for harmony, balance, and rhythm. Thus an aspiration for beauty. Art has also been defined as a journey into the mysterious, acting as a means for humans to experience themselves in relation to the universe. Art is beautiful, whether or not it is being used as an expression of the imagination or serving as a vessel for communication and entertainment, there is no absolute definition for art, nothing about it is definite, only that it is constantly changing and has different modes of expression and interpretation. In that sense, art reflects life, because like art, life is constantly evolving and full of diverse approaches and modes of expression and inspiration.

This blog is dedicated to expressing some of the activities, mediums, and modes of living that inspire and help define people as individuals. It will communicate, it will entertain, it will journey into the mysterious, hopefully landing upon things that inspire and intrigue.
