What Lies Beneath

When out in the line up, waiting for that lurker on the horizon, do you ever find yourself thinking about the world below? The ocean is one of the unique environments where two worlds can meet. A place where you can be out fighting for position on a wave, and below you some alien creature is struggling for survival or a pod of dolphins is shredding through the waves along side you.
The stunning images of Dustin Humphery create the ultimate fantasies, depicting what is taking place underneath the surface, the combination of two worlds, where real life meets the surreal. At least that is my take on his work. These images should get your creative juices flowing. The pictures below were part of the Insight Dopamine ad campaign that won Humphrey the 2009 Sony World Photography Award for Commercial Advertising.

The concepts blow my mind, and bring a whole new perspective to surf photography. The timing and amount of preparation to capture each of these images alone should be enough to draw your attention. Be it a naked girl riding a motorcycle, a barrage of underwater ballerinas, or an undersea graveyard, these unique and bizarre images should make your imaginations run rampant.

I love Dustin's work because it pushes the boundaries creatively, with its collision of two worlds, a mysterious unknown dream world mixed with the beautiful reality of surfing itself. At times surfing is truly surreal, making these images a perfect metaphor for the magic, mystery, and beauty behind surfing and the ocean itself.

So next time you put a big slash in on a wave, try to image the world underneath, and know that you have a troop of naked ballerinas on your side.
